Chicago native indie artist Serengeti, whose music many mainstream radio listeners may not be familiar with is definitely worth recognition. His sound is very hip-hop soul but his delivery has a comedic undertone that sometimes surpasses the density of his lyrics. Many of his songs reference his hometown, which makes his tracks fun to listen to even if you aren’t well oriented with the city of Chicago. Though the video features Serengeti as a new artist he can be considered a connoisseur of his craft. His first solo album “Dirty Flamingo” released in 2002 and he has since then released eleven more projects, along the way collaborating with producers Polyphonic and Hi-Fidel and being the featured lyricist in the indie project Yoome alongside Renee Louise. For those minimalist enthusiast who have this fixation with not putting any shoes on...I can see how these shoes may seem like an innovative and profound idea. But for the other 90% of human beings who feel that the normal rubber sole and string laces do the trick I truly see no purpose in the creation of this shoe. Late great musical composer Jay Dilla's mother "Ma Dukes" is currently dealing with Lupus, the same illness that took his own life. Artist Shepard Fairey most known for the Obey Giant and most recently Barack Obama Hope campaigns has created a piece in commemoration of Dilla in which the proceeds will benefit support efforts for Ma Dukes as she battles with her illness. A combination of my computer crashing and just having a ton of obligations to take care of you've probably noticed that I haven't made a post in a few days...And to those of you who didn't notice, now you know. Most people have been posting congratulatory statements about the Pittsburgh Steelers and Santonio Holmes and raving about how entertaining the Super Bowl was. I probably would devote a post to the "Consumer Bowl" too but unfortunately it was not the most interesting program I watched Sunday. If you like watching purposeful films, are interesting in the medical field, are a fan of Mos Def, or just interested in a good black history month story then the 2004 HBO film "Something the Lord Made" is the movie for you. It tells the story of Vivien Thomas a former medical technician under Dr. Alfred Blalock who with just a high school education became a pioneer in cardiac sugery, helping create the foundation for the cure of Tetrology of Fallot or Blue Baby Syndrome. Thomas never attended college and was actually denied course credit for life experience in the medical field from Morgan State University but was later granted his Doctorite from John Hopkins. The movie is captivating and informative so check it out...Open Your Heart and Get Old.

Let me start by saying that I am one of the greatest Kobe Bryant advocates on the planet...however after reading the piece GQ did on Lebron James for their February 2009 issue (which is a really good read by the way so pick it up), he might just be a genuine guy after all. There were no pretentious action photos with Bron holding a basketball or sweating and wearing a short set, just quality outfits and a good interview, which I can respect...Oh and in the midst of all of this a few of the GQ editors who are surprisingly gregarious and know a thing or two about ball, decided they would play Lebron in a pick up that went as expected to say the least...Maximize Potential and Get Old.

With all of the hype surrounding this year’s NFL playoffs it’s only fitting that I make a post dealing with football. This post however can apply to all persons no matter if you are a fan of American football or not because it’s about the metaphoric relationship between the game of football and the game of life. Personally I feel as if I'm the running back, where the ball represents responsibility and obligations and every gain of yards, first down, or touch down is synonymous with a positive step in life. All of the struggles and stress that try to bring an individual down, or tests (literally and figuratively) that may set a person back are symbolic to the defense on the field that is attempting to do the same. Sometimes in life no matter how smart or strong, or well trained you are at your craft…the ball gets fumbled and the impact of stress is so compelling that is takes from you what you are responsible for and obligated to. And for a period of time you feel as though you’ve let people down and don’t know what to say other than the initial...“FUCK!!”…. Then there’s that eerie silent walk back to the sideline or wherever that “alone place” is for you, with your helmet still on and your chin strap still buckled on one side, in part to maintain your privacy but also because you’re that anxious to step back into the game and prove yourself to your team, your coaches, the fans, the opposing team, and most importantly…to prove yourself to yourself. What’s encouraging in the game of life is that as long as you have breath in your lungs and a strong heartbeat there is still time on the clock. And whether stress and trials put points on the board or they go “3 and out” YOU WILL be able to show how all of the practice and preparation has paid dividends. The key is to take heed to your next opportunity or in this case the next time you get a carry, and remain diligent and consistent for a win is a win no matter if it’s by 1 point as the clock is winding down, or a hundred point blowout in the first quarter where the outcome is pretty much predetermined. BUT win lose or draw (*cough..Eagles)…being satisfied with how you played and knowing that you put forth your best effort is to know that your “game” was a SUCCESS…Reed Up and Get Old.

So I woke up this morning with a ridiculously sharp pain in my chest and abdomen and couldn't figure out why...but as I was rolling around the house (literally, because my stomach was bothering me so much walking was a fucking hassle) I had a revelation...McDONALD'S! Last night I ate a double quarter pounder and some of the saltiest, greasiest french fries in all of my 21 years of living and now I'm dealing with the consequences. The hot tea with honey and Tums has worked as a quick fix but a more permanent solution to these eating whoas can be found in an article from MSNBC of 5 Healthy Foods that should be incorporated into your diet... Content is quoted directly from the article.

1. Greek Yogurt: A great alternative to eggs. Greek yogurt has a tart taste and it is recommended as flavoring with berries, uncooked oatmeal, some nuts and ground flaxseed. In keeping with Middle Eastern and South Asian culinary traditions, this heavier, non-runny yogurt is also a great addition to main meals. Because the consistency is so similar, you can replace that dollop of sour cream with nonfat Greek yogurt, and add a spoonful to borscht and other soups, and even chicken recipe. It's also a perfect substitute for milk and butter in recipes. The full-fat version is so rich that, with a handful of walnuts and honey, you won’t miss ice cream at dessert.

2. Quinoa: Substitute quinoa to boost the protein profile in dishes like tabbouleh and couscous. Use it as a side dish, instead of rice or potatoes. And even though quinoa is technically a seed, it makes a great morning cereal, which you can also cook with milk.

3. Nut Butters (pause-they didn't pause this in the article obviously, but I found it necessary): Used as healthful substitutes in sauces and dips. Also try using magnesium-rich almond butter in peanut satay sauce. And by thinning out any nut butter with water, lemon juice or vinegar, oil and a handful of spices, you’ve got salad dressing.

4. Flax Seed: To add texture and visual effect, flax seed is used in its ground form to enhance different kinds of food. The seeds are used atop steamed vegetables, in smoothies, and in pancakes, muffins and other baked goods.

5. Dried Fruit: A variety of dried fruits can be mixed together and gently cooked in water or wine to create a naturally syrupy and nutritional compote. They’re a great way to add texture and flavor to other foods, says Thayer, who suggests tossing them into salads, pancake mixes, muffins, rice and even curries. Cream cheese with bits of dried fruit makes a great spread for appetizers, and a platter of softer cheeses, served with dried fruits and nuts, makes a great end-of-meal crowd pleaser.
